5 Reasons to Visit History Colorado

5 Reasons to Visit History Colorado

History Colorado is a vibrant museum located in Denver’s Golden Triangle Museum District. They moved to a new location downtown in 2012 and have been growing ever since!

About History Colorado:

“History Colorado has cared for the historic treasures of the state for more than 130 years and has directed over a quarter of a billion dollars in grants for statewide preservation and education to all regions of the state. Through our various offices, programs and services, History Colorado exerts a significant economic, cultural and civic impact and continues as a vital entity to the progress and development of Colorado.”

I attended an event for bloggers and media the other night and was blown away with the exhibits, facilities and their programs for kids. Here are our 5 reasons you should take a trip downtown to see them.

1. Fun Exhibits

Their current major feature is called 1968. With groovy decor, boss music and some neato history, it’s anything but dullsville. Okay, okay, I’ll cool it with the 60’s slang. Don’t need to flip your wig… dangit! Did it again.

Their upcoming summer exhibit will be something for all ages. Toys! With a look back at toy trends from the 70’s and 80’s, there will be something for everyone to enjoy.

2. Low Sensory Mornings

As a mom of an autistic son, this made me extremely happy! A few times a year History Colorado hosts Low Sensory Mornings with reservations to help control the crowd, turning down the sounds and turning up the fun! Admission is free as long as you make a reservation. The next one is March 21st from 8am -10am, so make sure you reserve your spots today! You can contact Shannon Voirol at shannon.voirol@state.co.us or call 303.866.4691 with questions or to make reservations.

3. Junior Museum Camp (Summer Day Camp)

Yes, History Colorado even has a summer camp where kids in grades 2nd through 5th can come and learn everything there is to know about the behind the scenes of this amazing museum. The current camp is set for June 22 – 26 from 9 am-4 pm (don’t worry, they also offer early drop offs and late pick ups for those families who need a more flexible schedule).

The camp costs $250/child for members and $280 for non-members. Since a family membership is only $80, if you are planning to sign up for this camp, doing so in addition to getting a membership is like getting a $30 discount on that membership! You can sign up for a membership online or call 303-HISTORY for more information.

4. Online Resources

Did you know that History Colorado has one of the most comprehensive and interactive website for kids? I had no idea until I got to play around with the site. You can explore current exhibits from the comfort of your home at Exhibits.HistoryColorado.org. Kids can earn digital badges, explore Bent’s Fort, Lincoln Hills and much more!

5. Preschool Story Time

Even younger kids can join the fun learning about the history of Colorado. Join History Colorado the first Wednesday of each month at 9:30 am with your 2-5 year olds and learn about farms, animals, cowboys and more! This monthly event is free for members or with a museum admission.

You can learn more about History Colorado on their website, but I highly recommend making the trek to see them in person!
