Papa Knitschmidt has quite the sweet tooth and likes to bake. He has made some amazingly yummy treats! When Chalupa Boy was a baby I worked for Papa for a while. There was always some kind of mini candy bar or chocolate nugget of one variety or another in the jar on his desk. But my favorite days were the ones when Papa had been baking and there was something wrapped up waiting for me.

Are non-organic foods safe and nutritious? Should I be worried about antibiotics in my meat? What about hormone usage in our meat and milk? What is the difference between organic and non-organic milk? These are all questions we’ve started to ask as consumers and mothers in recent years. I know they’ve nagged me.
I’ve done some cursory exploring on these topics since becoming a mom, because like all moms, I want what’s best for my child. I’ve searched the Internet, browsed books, asked friends, even thrown questions out on Twitter. Surprisingly, a few dairy farmers actually responded to me through Twitter. Can I just tell you as a side note, how much I love Twitter? Anyway, what they had to say about antibiotics and hormone usage in milk was vastly different from everything I had heard and read from every other source. It was refreshing to hear from the very people whose livelihood IS milk.
Wouldn’t it be great to be able to ask more questions like those above directly of farmers? Who better to know the answers in this age of agricultural biotechnology than those who study it and implement it?
Your questions became the impetus for the formation of CommonGround.

In lieu of a Wordless Wednesday, I wanted to share these words from one of our bloggers Kate (Knitschmidt). This is a message all women should read…
Being a Mom is a tough job. Being a Mom of a daughter just might do me in. Not for the reasons you think, although you can ask me again when she’s a teenager. What I’m worried about is raising a well-adjusted girl who is comfortable in her own skin, when there are all of these mixed messages being thrown around out there! Everybody talks about teaching our daughters to have healthy body images. That it’s not realistic for every girl to aspire to be as thin as the women they see in magazines and on TV.

How is everyone feeling four weeks into the New Year? Now is the perfect time to streamline your schedule, your workouts, and even your resolutions. Life is busy, hectic and full, but that doesn’t mean you have to lose touch with what matters most. As the Author of the book Life Simplified, I am obviously passionate about simplifying your life so you feel more joy. Things can become very overwhelming with work, kids, activities, managing the home, volunteering and more. Instead of piling more onto your already full plate, why not pick and choose the most important goals that align with your values and start there first. Look at your life as a whole and decide what areas need your attention. Maybe you need to simplify your schedule? Possibly simplifying your weekly meals? Pick a couple goals that need some overhauling and brainstorm ways you can ease the goals and improve your life at the same time. Because of my families crazy schedule with sports and activities, it would be near impossible to set a goal of cooking healthy meals every evening. Sometimes we have sandwiches and fruit in the car, or sometimes I prepare a meal ahead of time and just reheat it. By doing this I am saving myself a lot of stress and time. Click through for some ideas to get you started.
