I love all types of crafts. Knitting, crochet, paper crafts and more. I even recently bought modge podge! I have no idea what to do with it yet, but I have it on hand when the urge strikes for me to modge podge something within an inch of it’s life.
Quilting is one of my favorite crafts, but I rarely make time for it anymore. In the past I was constantly making quilts for anyone and everyone I knew. Each of my boys have multiple blankets and now, finally, I made one for myself. Well, it was for me until my 8 year-old claimed it.
I was at Hobby Lobby with my best friend Kate and we were just meandering about the store, as you do with Hobby Lobby. I went for stickers for some cards I had made and left with enough fabric for a nearly twin sized quilt (and that modge podge I mentioned!). They had a jelly roll of some amazing fabrics so I had to have it! A jelly roll is essentially a roll of 15-20+ strips of 2 1/2 inch wide fabric. They look so neat all rolled up and coordinating.
I had no idea what to do with the fabric when I saw it, but that’s why they make the internet on your phone right?! I quickly typed in a few things and came across a wicked easy pattern. I figured out the rest of the fabric I needed and went to the check out.
Now Kate has known me for quite some time, so she wasn’t surprised at all when I went in for stickers and left with a swirl of fabric. She may have joked around with me about my crafty ADD, but surprised she was not. I darted home to start the project!
Once home I realized I didn’t have my big plastic ruler (or measuring stick as I call it, much to Kate’s dismay). I was so desperate to craft right then and there I found one of the kids school rulers. Yes. I know. But it worked! Later that night I had to grab a couple of things from the store so I bought a real quilting guide/ruler, but the kids ruler worked fine in a pinch.
I was cutting and sewing and cutting and sewing my little heart out. Pins were flying everywhere and I even brought out the iron. I meant business.
AT the end of the day, er, weekend, I had a quilt. Simple, modern and with an orange backing. I was proud of my work and showed it off all over instagram and facebook. Then, my son proclaimed that orange was his favorite color and swiftly stole the quilt. Hmmmmm. I guess I’m off to the store to get another jelly roll of fabric. But knowing me, I’ll go in for fabric and leave with a completely different craft project in hand. 😉
