The holidays are in full swing. Halloween brought candy, Thanksgiving will bring pies and who can resist those Holiday cookies and baking? Since I’ve been working with a great organization, LiveWell Colorado, I’ve been trying to figure healthier alternatives to the sweets and treats the kids go for. Honestly though, if I’m not practicing what I preach, the kids won’t bother either.
Now don’t get me wrong, you can still serve pie! How about a healthier version with less sugar? Or even by simply making the slices smaller, you helping to keep those sweets in check. Being healthy isn’t about denying, it’s about moderation.

LiveWell Colorado’s EatWell@School initiative is an after-school, extra-curricular program focused on raising awareness of the importance of healthy eating at school.
Led by Johnson & Wales volunteer chef mentors, students from Manual High School, Bruce Randolph High School, KIPP Denver Collegiate High School and Martin Luther King Jr. Early College will learn how to prepare a healthy and delicious school meal.
Student teams will prepare school lunch menus that align with the standards for public school lunches, including meeting or exceeding USDA nutrition guidelines and staying within similar budgets.
The 2012 winning menu will be served at the luncheon.
