Normally on Tuesdays, I’d share a favorite recipe with you, but I wanted to take a day to just count my blessings and bring my focus to those who aren’t as fortunate.
As a school nutrition professional, I see the face of childhood hunger every day. It’s a hard reality to face, but as many as 1 in 4 Colorado kids don’t know where their next meal is coming from. That’s what’s known as “food insecurity”, and it’s why I am so dedicated to my job of providing nutritious, hot meals to my students.
There’s a lot of worthy organizations out there that are fighting the good fight, including Amp the Cause, which is based right here in Denver. Amp the Cause is the organization behind some amazing events, such as Denver Day of Rock–a free summer music festival in the heart of Dowtown that features incredibly talented national and local acts. They support several Colorado non-profits, all centered around kids and families.
This fall, they’re promoting #FootballForACause, which is awesome because it involves a) watching football and b) helping hungry kids! It’s super simple to participate. All you have to do is pledge any number of non-perishable food items for each point your team scores during the game. Doesn’t matter which game, which team, or you can be extra generous and pledge both teams’ combined score. For example, I’m pledging 2 items per point scored by my Denver Broncos at this weekend’s game against the Browns. Easy peasy! The drive is in support of Metro Caring, where I’ll be dropping off my items, but ALL the food banks are in real need this time of year, so of course you can bring them to any donation center near you!
I hope that you’ll join me in pledging to help Metro Caring (or your nearest food bank) and help alleviate hunger in Colorado and across the country.
