I think I have mice!

DH complained awhile ago that he was hearing something in the attic. I hadn't heard it until yesterday afternoon. Its like scratching knawing sounds like a rat or mouse would make. Then I heard it again this morning. So off to Home Depot to get a new flashlight since the kids destroyed our other one. And some mouse trapping stuff. Then I made a trip up to the attic to see what I could find. It's hard to tell because we just put brand new insulation in spring. And its loose insulation but I thought I might have seen some little burrows. Sooo laid out the bate and I get to see what we find in a couple days. I am so thrilled.... :whoop Another great thing to add to our plate.... We keep joking thats its the evil squirrel trying to just piss me off. I am already running through the house just to catch it on our porch and scare it off. It is funny seeing a squirrel jump 5 feet in the air towards a tree from my trash can.... :bust

If it's in the attic I would guess squirrels. We had squirrels get into our attic for awhile (until DH chopped down the tree branches that they were using). They make the scratching/gnawing sound, they make burrows, and they like attics. I've never heard of mice in the attic, but it could be.

With a squirrel get a squirrel trap - you can get them at Home Depot. Peanut butter is good bait. Only leave one end open (it says both ends, but only do one). They work really well. You then have to go to release it elsewhere.

Be careful up in the attic so you don't accidentally step onto the ceiling and crack it (had this happen!). Good luck!

Ugh would be just my luck to have the squirrel living up there.... I have an evil squirrel I will see over the next couple days if we get anything with the mouse stuff, if not I will get a trap on the next payday. I will check our trees too! Thanks for the tips I have dealt with mice/rats before in my parents old house but never dealt with squirrels in the attic.

I'd guess squirrel. I have a friend that has squirrels in her attic and it sounds like what you're describing. Also I think it is much more likely that a squirrel would make it to the attic--mice tend to stay low down where there is food... like in your kitchen.... We have mice. We've had mice in our kitchen, in our living room, in our garage, in our car.... You see droppings for sure if there are mice. :banghead We hired Orkin to come mouse proof and it seems to be working--I'm sure they could help with squirrels too. Good luck. Pests suck. I think squirrels too! I would see if you can find the hole and patch it (or find how they get up there and chop it down) otherwise you may continue to have them (regardless of baiting them) and they can have a family up there! I know of that happening to someone. :hugg

We found out that the chimney capping inspection issue from when we bought our house was NOT in fact taken care of. We found this out when the squirrel decided to make a nest in our chimney. :doh Good luck!!

Or racoons. I had a mom and two babies in my chimney this summer.

I'll have to agree with the above that noises from the attic are probably squirrles and not mice. But this time of year it's never a bad thing to put out the mice traps and decon. You just never know and it's better safe than sorry.

Awww don't tempt me with kittens. I have been telling DH I want one but he keeps telling me no. :giggle

I did go up and check and nothing touched the food, so I will keep checking but probably on next payday I will look into a squirrel trap.
