I’m not exactly the perfect Suzie Q Homaker, but now I can fake it until I make it peoples! I received a review copy of Home Ec-101 – Skills for Everyday Living by Heather Solos. This book isn’t one you read cover to cover, it’s a reference book that sits right next to me in the office at all times.
Need to know how to get rid of mildew stains? This book had tips. Need to know how to clean cat puke from linens? Yup, it’s in there! Meal Planning for your family? There is a whole section devoted to it! I absolutely love this book.
Heather doesn’t give us boring “how to clean the lint trap of your dryer” instructions in a monotone voice. There are letters from readers asking various questions, extra tips in easy to spot callout boxes, anecdotes and my personal favorite “Confessions.” Flipping to the laundry section, you can read a confession about when not to fold laundry, like after a night of fun with friends. The reader states “Folding with a hangover is awful”. True That!
Heather goes on to talk to us about appliances, how to clean window treatments, getting musty smells out of jeans, etc. The info packed in this colorful little book is enormous! Painting, organizing, how to stock your pantry… Each section is short, sweet and to the point (with a little of Heather’s witty flare to go along with it). Even though it’s a reference book, I read it cover to cover, just incase she talked about something I didn’t know I had to do! Like cleaning out the hair and debris from the vacuum bar! Who knew I was collecting the fur of a small animal?! I cleaned it out and my vacuum not only worked like new, I had created a new pet for the kids. I call him the Longhair Lint Bunny. Ain’t he cute?!
Now for the fun part. I’m giving away a copy of Home-Ec 101 to one lucky reader! Even if you don’t think you need it, you do. Or your mom does, so it would make a great Mother’s Day gift (provided she doesn’t get insulted when you finally teach her that bleaching everything isn’t the answer).
