Local Business Spotlight: Young Americans Center for Financial Education

Mexico and Brazil Boys

If you’re the parent of a 4th or 5th grade student, you might be familiar with the Young Ameritowne program, a full day of simulation including working a job, purchasing goods and services, obeying town laws, and balancing a budget. Kids at participating schools prep for it and look forward to it all year.

What you may not know is that Young Ameritowne is part of Young Americans Center for Financial Education, (YA Center) which includes the world’s only real, FDIC-insured bank that caters specifically to the under-21 crowd. Kids can open a checking and savings account, sock money away in a CD, and apply for loans and credit. Friendly tellers and kid-sized counters make it easy and fun for kids to manage their money! YA Center is a non-profit that first opened in 1987 and teaches life/work skills and financial literacy to approximately 50,000 kids each year.

At YA Center, kids can start a business, run a town, or rule the world!

This summer, YA Center is offering several summer camps for 3rd through 6th graders at two of their Denver area locations: Belmar (401 S. Pierce St. in Lakewood) and Denver headquarters (3550 E. 1st Ave in Cherry Creek) There are lots of different camps to choose from, and they’re all only $195 for the week.

Camps are Monday-Thursday 9am-4pm and include:

  • Running Your Own Biz
  • Young Ameritowne 1 and 2
  • International Towne
  • Girls Can!
  • Be Your Own Boss

Financial literacy and self-sufficiency are so very important for our kids. In the words of founder Bill Daniels, “Kids who learn early about simple economics, banking and personal finance have a huge head start on their peers and will become more financially aware as adults.”

The experts at YA Center know exactly how to take something that makes us grown-ups well…groan! and turn it into one of the most fun experiences your kid will have. My own kids talked about it for months after their schools did the Young Ameritowne and International Towne programs, and your summer campers will have the time of their lives, too! Heck, they might even come home and teach you a few things!

Summer camps are enrolling now, and spots are filling up quickly. For more information or to enroll in a camp, click here:

YA Center also offers several one-day workshops throughout the year: search “YA Center” on our Calendar page for more details!
