Autism may now affect 1 in 68*, but that number is drastically lower when comparing autistic boys and girls. Often studies and articles cite a ratio of 4:1, meaning for every 4 autistic boys, there is 1 autistic girl. The characteristics can differ greatly as well. The Simon Foundation Autism Research Initiative (SFARI) recently published an article explaining the differences in depth after various studies were conducted. You can find their research here.
Rather than bore you with more studies and statistics, I’d like to show you how amazing girls and women with autism can be! Here are 5 women with autism who have made quite an impact.
Of course I would start with Temple Grandin. I’ve met her, chatted with her about my own son and admired her work for a while now. If you don’t know much about her, I highly suggest watching the HBO movie based on her life (staring Claire Danes) and also watch her TED talk. Both incredibly inspiring.
