I don’t know about your kids, but having 3 boys here means when it’s time to brush teeth before school and before bed, lots of protesting and whining ensues. Having a family full of Dentists helps, but there are only so many times I can threaten to have Grandpa or their Uncle scold them for their brushing habits. 😉
My youngest son is on the autism spectrum and used to LOVE brushing his teeth. He would stim on toothbrushing and we went through dozens and dozens of toothbrushes. Fast forward to now and it’s becoming a challenge to get him to actually get some real brushing done instead of just chewing or playing with the tooth brushes. Here are a few tips that have really helped get him to brush.
My son loves the Disney movie Cars and will do just about anything if it involves the characters. Oral B has some great character toothbrushes that have really kept Brady’s interest in brushing. We show him pictures of Lightning McQueen and his bright white smile and tell B that he has to brush properly to have the same smile!
Using a timer in any task with autistic kids is key! B is so much calmer and ready to do the task at hand if he knows just how long he has to do it, or how long until his reward for completing a task.
Since Brady loves ceiling fans, I try to use them as a reward. Brush your teeth for 2 minutes (and brush properly) and then I will let him play and clean our ceiling fan with his long duster that he loves. If he’s had a whole week of great work, then a trip to Home Depot is in store for him. No really, it’s one of his favorite places!
Use An App
Oral B has just come out with a great Disney Magic Timer App, it’s free to download! Then just scan your Oral B or Crest products to unlock the features! As your child brushes, a character or picture will appear. They can collect a different image each time and keep it in their album. There is a calendar that keeps track of their brushing as well, so you can reward them for brushing twice a day! (For full info on the app and to watch a short video, click here!)
These are just a few ways we have been successful in getting Brady to not only brush his teeth, but to do so for two full minutes and properly.
