Deviating a bit (OK, a LOT) from my usual healthy recipes, and sharing this super fun and edible craft that my kids learned at a free library event over the summer. It’s a perfect activity for a birthday party, Scout group, or other large, chaotic gathering of children, and if everyone brings one item on […]
I was combing through all my old recipes a few days ago,and in the piles of handwritten scrap papers and magazine cut outs, I found a piece of torn notebook paper with driving directions scribbled on it. Wherever the directions led was pretty far on the opposite side of Denver from me, so it took […]
One of the things I love most about the seasonal and local approach that my family and I have towards what we eat, is that we mark the seasons in terms of fruits and vegetables. Winter brings citrus and pomegranate, Spring means asparagus, lettuce, and strawberries. Summer comes with berries, cherries, cucumbers, corn, peaches… But […]

This cake is one of my family’s favorites: I get requests for it year round but especially in Spring and Summer. It’s very […]

Papa Knitschmidt has quite the sweet tooth and likes to bake. He has made some amazingly yummy treats! When Chalupa Boy was a baby I worked for Papa for a while. There was always some kind of mini candy bar or chocolate nugget of one variety or another in the jar on his desk. But my favorite days were the ones when Papa had been baking and there was something wrapped up waiting for me.
Now if you know me, I hate “squishy fruit”. I don’t liked cooked or mushy fruit, just a weird thing with me. So… That said, I tend to keep the apple slices pretty thick so they stay a bit firm with this dessert. DH likes the apples more tender, it’s all personal preference and how […]
