Tasty Tuesday: Candy Sushi


Deviating a bit (OK, a LOT) from my usual healthy recipes, and sharing this super fun and edible craft that my kids learned at a free library event over the summer. 

It’s a perfect activity for a birthday party, Scout group, or other large, chaotic gathering of children, and if everyone brings one item on the list to contribute, it’s cheap, too! 

We love sushi at our house–my oldest likes to share Nigiri with me, my middle adores California rolls, and my littlest is a huge fan of Dragon rolls, full of spicy fish and colorful veggies with lots of crunchy tempura on top. But one type they can all agree on is CANDY SUSHI! Yes, it’s a lot of sugar and junk, but that’s what makes it fun for a big gathering. Everyone can share ingredients to make a different style of sushi, and swap with friends so they all take home just a few pieces. 

What you need: 

Rice Krispie treats (one serving-sized square per person)

Fruit Roll-ups (one per person)

Waxed/parchment paper

Rolling pin

Sharp knife

Glass of hot water

Several assorted candies:

  • Swedish fish
  • gummy worms
  • Nerds
  • licorice (twists and/or lace type)
  • mini M&Ms
  • chocolate syrup

A small amount of white icing (we made a thick, spreadable powdered sugar and water paste)

To make “Maki”:

Maki is any type of sushi that’s rolled in seaweed and sliced. 

Roll out the Rice Krispie square on waxed paper until it’s about 1/4 inch thick. Place a few of the soft gummy candies inside, laying them out vertically in the center of the Rice Krispie. Starting at one long side, roll up the Rice Krispie with the candy inside it. Wrap the outside with the Fruit Roll Up and slice into 1/2 inch rounds, dipping the knife into hot water between slices to keep it from sticking. Drizzle with chocolate syrup to resemble soy sauce, if desired.

To make “Gokan”: 

Gokan is a rice and seaweed roll that’s topped with fish roe

With your hands, roll the Rice Krispie treat into a short, wide cylinder. Wrap with a Fruit Roll Up and slice in half to make two rounds.  Spread the top of each round with a bit of the icing. Sprinkle with Nerds or mini M&Ms to resemble the fish eggs.

To make “Temaki”:

Temaki is a cone-shaped roll, called a “hand roll” because it is not sliced and simply eaten with the hands. 

Shape the Rice Krispie into a cone, and flatten one side slightly. Arrange soft candies on the flattened side, and wrap with a Fruit Roll Up. Leave some candies sticking out of the wide end. 

To make “Nigiri”

Nigiri is simply a thin piece of sashimi laid atop a rice ball. 

Cut the Rice Krispie treat into 2-4 smaller pieces, and roll into balls or football shapes. Arrange a Swedish fish or Gummy worm atop each piece, and secure with a 1/2″ wide strip of Fruit Roll Up wrapped around the candy and rice, or a dollop of icing spread under the candy. 


Have fun and get creative–these are just a few basic styles of sushi to get you started. Don’t be afraid to try different shapes and candies. The sky’s the limit!
